HDQ_08: Grudge Match

Langdedrosa Cyanwrath was many things, but frightened of a diminutive halfling girl was not among them. The half-dragon champion towered at nearly eight feet tall, and the scorn he held toward weakness could be felt in his gaze. Alas, if he had only thought to pay more respect to those who had formerly bested him in combat, his end may have been avoided.

He heard the noises drifting down the cave shaft from Frulam's chambers - noises of combat and strife - but he chose not to care. When a bright light shone down the ladder carelessly, Langdedrosa stood by calmly and prepared himself for the fight to come. He couldn't say who would be foolish enough to invade the cultist camp, neither did he care. If he had stopped to consider the power of his commander, he might have thought to be concerned that the intruders were somehow able to advance past her, but he was too arrogant to think of such things. Langdedrosa's concern for Frulam Mondath ended when the wearer of the purple decided to ignore his anger toward the coward Lennithon.

And that was truly as deep as the whole issue went with Langdedrosa. Although he would never think to challenge Lennithon personally, but would rather cower before the awesome might of the great blue serpent, he nevertheless thought of the dragon as "that coward Lennithon." Although he would never dare to oppose Frulam Mondath to her face, knowing full well his leader could and would skin him alive, he thought of her as weak, cowardly and ineffective. He stewed in these beliefs, biding his time until Rezmir would call him up to join the central efforts of the cult. Until he was brought forward to a place where he could be of real use instead of wasting his strength and honor pillaging helpless villagers.

So, in this mind, blind and arrogant though it might have been, Langdedrosa stood and waited for the latest in a long line of challengers. He gripped his greatsword and imagined the glories of the battle ahead. His personal guard, three berserkers who had fought beside him in more glorious battles of the past, stood stoically and awaited their leader's command. They watched with patience as the five adventurers descended from above, took their bearings and realized they had fallen into Langdedrosa's trap. But one of these he recognized immediately: Seraphina Tealeaf. This little whelp deserved the thrashing Lagdedrosa was about to give.

With a mighty roar, Langdedrosa called out, "You want to try to finish the job? I went easy on you last time!" and then crouched and drew his breath.

If the half-dragon had thought he would strike first, he greatly underestimated his foe. Even as he drew breath, Seraphina sprang into action, flying forward in a blur after taking but a second to recognize the situation. She buried her blade deep into Langdedrosa's still-healing shoulder, staggering him with the raw fury of her attack. Then she slashed again, darting away.

He breathed lightning at her, catching all of her companions in the act. The electric blast crackled through the group, singing each of them in turn. It may have been dishonorable collateral pain, but Langdedrosa cared little as he threw himself forward, slashing wildly at the halfling with his enormous blade.

Still sparking from the attack, Shay Davencolt charged forward, slamming into Langdedrosa with sword and shield, sending her hound, Jonathan, to attack one of the berserkers standing by. In response, Orth Fullblade charged forward to attack the paladin and the fight began in earnest. The battle was brutal, with Langdedrosa falling first under a flurry of Seraphina's swords. There were no kobold servants to save him now, and his berserkers could do little to prevent the inevitable. They tried to stop the raging barbarian, Unka, savaging her with blow after blow, but the blind rage of the half-orc carried her on, keeping her feet when a lesser opponent would have fallen.

One by one, the berserkers spent themselves on the strength of our heroes until none were left standing on the blood-slick floor of the dragon shrine. Faithful servants of Tiamat, they would find themselves reunited with her far sooner than they had imagined, only joining her in the nine hells instead of upon the face of Faerun.

The adventurers were far from unscathed. Their strength was spent and their bodies weary. They decided to retreat back to Frulam's chambers and barricade themselves in the narrow cove which held her bed so that they could take some well-deserved rest.

Moving on after the fight, the group progressed farther into the cavern and came upon a dragon egg hatchery, where the floor of the cave dipped low and the area was exceptionally humid. Coming into the room on a ledge, the party had only just begun to explore the area when suddenly they were surprised by a volley of glue bombs and fire bombs. Most of the adventurers were dexterous enough to avoid these attacks, charging to the far end of the ledge where the bombs seemed to be emanating from. But as they dashed across they were entangled by the tentacles of a roper! Tross easily broke free, but Rilos used his magic to attack, which caused the roper to become enraged.

While Shay struggled to make it to the pit which the bombs flew out of, Tross was grabbed again and yanked over the pit of eggs. The roper dropped him to the floor below, where he crashed to the ground awkwardly. Shay finally uncovered the kobolds who were throwing the bombs and started dispatching them while Tross tried to make his way back to the ledge. He was intercepted by a guard drake.

The roper grasped hold of Rilos then, yanking him out over the pit as well and dropping him to the guard drake below. There Rilos and Tross worked together to fight the guard drake. Unka also joined in. Seraphina sprinted past the melee, making for the back wall which she used to vault herself into the air and stab the troublesome roper. Then a second guard drake joined the fray just as Shay finished cleaning up the kobolds.

The fighting was intense and tough. Two of our heroes fell in battle while the other fought valiantly on. In the end, they managed to prevail over their foes, eventually whittling away at the life of the roper until it dropped to the ground, dead. Battered, shaken and weary, the party recovered slowly from the attack.
