HDQ_02: The Sally Port

Continuing around the southern edge of town, our heroes encountered one more band of raiders and a few empty buildings before they happened upon a group of frightened millers, hiding out near the home of Gabriel Delmar, who owns the mill. Mr. Delmar was not present, though, and the millers, who had been working late when the raid started, were uncertain what they ought to do. Shay readily offered them protection, indicating the group of them should move quickly toward the keep. The millers were all too happy to receive help.

Moving quickly along the riverbank, this large group stumbled across another small gathering of townsfolk who were similarly uncertain of what to do. With the main entrance to the keep closed off, the townspeople had been left with very few options. These two were invited to follow through the hidden entrance of the Old Tunnel. Seraphina kept a close eye on these stragglers to be certain no hidden betrayal was afoot.

Governor Nighthill was, again, very grateful for the assistance offered, though it was clear he was still quite distracted by the many friends and neighbors who had not made it to the keep yet. This congratulations were thin, but heartfelt. There was no time for celebration, though. The keep’s sally port - a side gate built to allow the keep’s defenders to repel battering rams - had been breached by an overenthusiastic scouting party. Castellan and his men ran down the infiltrators before too much damage was done, but the gatehouse was still undefended and  Nighthill remained very concerned that more raiders would exploit the breach and steal away the town’s last vestige of safety by compromising the keep.

Our heroes leapt to action, first storming the gatehouse and eradicating the cultist invaders who were trying to hold that advantage. With the path cleared, Nighthill sent the only resources he had on hand: some acolytes of Chauntea who knew the mending spell. They applied their magic to the broken gate to restore its former structure as the first step before carpenters would be called to shore up the whole structure.  However, even as they worked to seal the breach, a new and more powerful party of raiders broke off from the main encampment to assault the breach before it could be closed.

Seraphina led the charge, unleashing her full fury on a hulking guard drake who shrugged her assault off and charged into the unfortunate Unka whom Seraphina had dashed to hide behind. A thundering blow nearly brought Unka to her knees before Shay took command of the guard drake and freed the group to deal with the cultists and kobolds flanking their defense.

Our heroes then made short work of the would-be breachers, affording more than enough time for Nighthill’s workers to bolster the sally port and prevent any future incursion.
